GEN is a Turkish film for those interested in the psychological aspects of horror and murder, or for those just interested in a thrill, directed by Togan Gökbakar. Whatever your fancy, the attempted murderer and star of the film will leave you glued to your seat or sofa throughout the film. Dubbed for English audiences, the film centers on a mental hospital in a remote area of the countryside, with police attempting to arrive at the scene to conduct their investigation of a murder case. Coincidentally at this same exact time, a new psychiatrist has arrived at the hospital by the name of Dr. Deniz who will play a primary important role in the development of the story.
Road blockages and landslides caused by heavy and torrential rains are reaping havoc outside, and the mental hospital telephone lines are suddenly broken off. Add to this the possibility of a murderer loose in the facility, and the movie springboards into action without even a moment’s stop for a breath of air.
The audience is brought through three days of frightening weather, uncertainty, and horror as a madman is let loose in the insane asylum and havoc is left to free reign. Themes throughout the movie bring the audience to realize the frightening string-thin hair thread we all balance on in society, showing the darker underbelly of the world and its inhabitants. Even as police struggle to reach the facility in time to save whoever is still left alive, darker events are unfolding as thunder and lightning prevail in the environment and a sense of foreboding enshrouds the facility.
Starring Haldun Boysan, Volkan Cal, Cemil buyukdogerli, Levent Can, and Zeliha Guney, and directed by Togan Gokbakar, the film is a real treat for audiences accustomed to English-language films and culture. While the film is dubbed, the feeling of the film remains foreign, and the surprises inherent in any foreign film remain unchanged and in place for everyone’s viewing pleasure.
Whether you are watching for the gore, for the suspense, or for the psychological intricacies, GEN will not be a film that disappoints you. With strong character development, suspenseful scenes, and excellent environmental effects, the entire picture and scenery brings together a strong display of talent and energy. Anyone interested in foreign films will be interested in adding this to their must see list of movies, as will anyone interested in the darker aspects of society of psychology. A must – see by any standard, this movie stars Noel Thurman and Michael Roemer in the English version.
